MARITIME PAINTER

George Kniest - Maritiem KunstschilderAs a young boy George came under the spell of classic sailing boats, resulting in a lifelong infatuation with the maritime world and this in turn has become the overall theme of his oeuvre. His maritime paintings show the sea, skies and sailing boats, representing the almost romantic atmosphere about historic sailing ships.

His realistic technique of painting and his obvious passion for classic sailing boats often put his paintings in an era in which sailing still prospered but which has come to an end by the arrival of the ship motors. Europe’s maritime heritage is supported by several organisations, many volunteers and owners who maintain and preserve historic sailing boats in working order despite mounting costs.

As a sailing enthusiast, George started his own business in 1964, a ship chandlery. He was able to combine his passion for sailing with his working life. For thirty years he has been part of the maritime world of passionate sailors and their ships. George sold his business in 1995. He followed in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, who were painters, and started ardently painting the sea, skies and, of course, sailing boats.
